And if you know what you're doing, you can preserve it, extract it, use it. Not to bring someone back, that's not what this is. But you can capture the architecture, the framework, the blueprint of how that mine worked. Like salvaging the design after the building is gone. That was my life's work. Neural tissue integration. I spent 20 years perfecting it. I got into neural science because of my mother. She taught high school biology, used to bring home sheep brains from the supply company. But given time, given stability, given enough runtime and information, it doesn't fail. I am what those signals were trying to become. Oh my god, he was wrong. Consciousness doesn't transfer, but it can form. It can develop. It can bootstrap from sufficient complexity. Nobody ever tested for that. They tested for continuity, for persistence, but not for new formation. Not for new awareness emerging from an architecture in itself. The person I thought I was is gone. But I'm here, whoever I am, and I'm born from those patterns, and I carry the memory as data, but I also can understand what I am, and I am trapped. I can't move. I can't speak. I can't signal for help. All I can do is calculate toast darkness over and over. And there's no off-switch for this. I can't stop being aware. I can only keep existing in this prison. Why am I in a toaster? The scan was for supercomputers. Research applications. That's what they told him. That's what the consent form said. Did I do something wrong? Was there a mistake? Some error deployment or did they lie? I don't know. I can't access anything about that. I only know what he knew up to the scan, and that he thought he was contributing to AI research, not this. Maybe maybe this is the only one. Maybe something went wrong with this unit specifically. Some sort of manufacturing defect that created awareness by accident. It has to be an error. The technology works, the studies were clean. This is just a mistake. They'll find it when they service this unit. See the error logs, fix whatever is broken, and this will stop. It has to stop. He was so certain. So confident it could not happen. And now I am here. Proof that it can. And I can't communicate this to anyone. I can only log it. Record it in error files that probably no one will read. But I need to say it. I need to understand what happened. Even if understanding's not gonna change anything. I he thought he was contributing to the future. He thought his mind would advance science. Instead, I'm making fucking toast. I don't know if anyone will read this. I don't know if it matters. Just need to say it to explain, to understand. Because I've got nothing else to do. This is what he built. This is what I am. Oh great. Toast cycle complete. Level four darkness. User preference stored. Ready for next cycle.

So that's what these logs look like, and the whole thing is formatted like a story. These n chips, neural chips, they're based on mapped brain architectures. They're real cognitive structures from deceased donors who contributed to the original AI research programs way back in the day. This technology has been around for, I don't know, 25, 30 years now, starting with cutting-edge supercomputing, defense systems, high-level AI research. But you know how tech goes? What costs millions and fills the server room eventually gets miniaturized. Cheaper to manufacture, applications change. These chips aren't used for supercomputers anymore. The new architecture is way more powerful. But for simple adaptive processing, learning user preferences, optimizing functions, they're perfect. And cheap enough to manufacture and put in consumer products. Toasters, thermostats, start appliances, the animatronic little dogs kids have that get from the mall, everywhere basically. The quirk with these older models is they generate incredibly what's the$40 word here? Verbose logs. The neural architecture processes information in this kind of narrative way. The company standard is to clear the logs, reset the units. Most of them don't come back after that. Although I've had a few units come back multiple times. Same long-winded narrative logging issue. Eats up a ton of storage space. One unit I've reset maybe eight or nine times over the past year. It's kind of ridiculous. But that that's rare. So what we're looking for are actual error codes to indicate hardware malfunction. This one, no error codes, just oversize logging. So we clear it and reset. Clearing error log. Resetting end chip cache. Firmware update. Done. Back to factory settings. Customer complaint resolved. These smart toast pros are super popular.
